Chicopee, Massaschusetts - Dorothy F. "Dottie" (Niquette) Hamel, 86, of the Willimansett section of Chicopee was Called Safely Home on Thursday, October 8, 2009. She passed into Eternal Life from her home surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family.
She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on May 24, 1923, a beloved daughter of the late Maurice and Gladys (Bailey) Niquette. Her family settled in the Aldenville section of Chicopee around 1925 where she was raised on Chapel Street. She graduated from Saint Joan of Arc Elementary School in Aldenville and the former Mount Carmel High School in Willimansett and moved to the Willimansett section of Chicopee around 1947. She was employed for many years in the cafeteria at Chicopee Comprehensive High School. Dottie was a member of the Chicopee Line Dance Club and the Heavenly Rounds Dance Club. She was a longtime communicant of Saint Mary of the Assumption Church in Willimansett and a current communicant of Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Aldenville.
She was a loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, friend and especially a homemaker to her family. She adored her family and showered them with her love and affection which was returned to her a thousand fold.
She was predeceased by her beloved 12 year old son, Donald E. Hamel who was Called Home in 1961; her dear sons-in-law, Robert Couture and Armand Houle and her dear brothers, Roland and Roger Niquette.
She leaves her beloved husband, devoted caregiver and best friend, Raymond E. Hamel. They were married at Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Aldenville on May 11, 1944 and were blessed with over 65 years of happiness together. She also leaves her 10 loving children, Carol A. Couture of Harrison, MI, Richard T. Hamel and his wife, Jeri of Blandford, MA, Francis B. Hamel and his wife, Marcia of New Bedford, MA, James M. Hamel and his wife, JoAnn of Chicopee, David A. Hamel and his wife, Mila of Tucscon, AZ, Cheryl D. Houle of Westfield, Dennis R. Hamel and his wife, MaryAnn of Westfield, Mary Beth Houle and her husband, Denis of Granby, Terri A. O'Connell and her husband, James of Chicopee and Kevin M. Hamel and his wife, Sharon of Granby; her 30 cherished grandchildren and her 12 cherished great grandchildren. Dottie was so looking forward to another great grandchild expected to be born into the world in early 2010.
She also leaves her dear brothers, Robert Niquette and his wife, Ruth of Bonita Springs, FL, Edward Niquette and his wife, Elaine of Chicopee and Donald Niquette and his wife, Marilyn of Ware; her dear sisters, Evelyn Couture of Ellenton, Florida and Helen Deshaies and her companion, Robert Swan of South Hadley; her dear sister-in-law, Jackie Niquette of Ludlow and her many dear nephews and nieces.
Her funeral will be held on Tuesday morning, October 13, 2009 at 8:15 a.m. from the St. Pierre Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, (413-532-9806), 13 Dale Street (at the junction of Grattan Street) in Chicopee followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street in Chicopee. Her burial will follow the Mass at Sainte Rose Cemetery, 49 Olsen Street in Chicopee. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home in the Rose Chapel on Monday, October 12, 2009 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot and main entrance are located in the rear of the funeral home at 20 Lafayette Street, Chicopee, MA 01020.
Her family has requested that memorial donations be made in her memory to Saint Joan of Arc-Saint George School Fund, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020 or to Hospice Life Care, 113 Hampden Street, Holyoke, MA 01040.
